Frequently Asked Questions
What was the Toronto Raptors' first season?
The Toronto Raptors had a terrible debut season, winning only 21 games. The 1995-1996 Toronto Raptors was the inaugural NBA season. The Raptors joined the league as one of two expansions teams, along with Vancouver Grizzlies. It was also the NBA's first season outside of the United States.
Isiah Tom, an All Star point guard and a Detroit Pistons legend was named the team's general manager. He was involved in the draft that produced Damon Stoudamire. He would go on to win Rookie-of-the Year. They also acquired Tracy Murray (and Oliver Miller) in separate trades. Thomas also introduced a brand new primary logo, featuring a play by basketball dinosaur and new pinstripe jerseys with the logo. The Raptors added purple to their color scheme.
Brendan Malone, new head coach for the Raptors, made his debut on November 3 against the New Jersey Nets at SkyDome. The Raptors lost their next seven contests.
Murray was second on the team for scoring, with an average of 16.2 points per contest. He also led the team by scoring 151 three-point field goal attempts during that season. Miller had 12.9 points per game, 1.4 steals, 1.4 assists and 1.9 block per match, while Robertson was responsible for 9.3 points with 4.4rebounds, four assists, two steals per contest off the bench.
Despite having the worst attendance record in the league they still managed to attract over 17283 fans per match at SkyDome (now Rogers Centre).
What was the first year of existence of the Toronto Raptors in 1985?
The Toronto Raptors first season in the NBA proved to be difficult. Brendan Malone, who was then hired by Isiah as GM, became the head coach for the Raptors' 1995 franchise. They soon acquired many talented players through the draft and through trades. They won the Chicago Bulls' game once that season, but their overall record was 21-61.
Toronto drafted Marcus Camby in 1996. He was named Rookie of Year and was part of the starting lineup with Alvin Williams as point guard. Later in 1997, Damon Stoudamire was traded away, and more changes to the roster were made over the following years as Toronto looked to build a foundation for future successes.
Despite all these changes, the team has struggles in its first few seasons of the NBA. After a period of transition and rebuilding, Toronto finally made its first playoff appearance in 2000 but lost the series to the New York Knicks.
How did they win the NBA title 2019?
On July 18, 2018, the Toronto Raptors traded DeMar DeRozan, Jakob Poltl, and a protected 2019 first-round draft pick to the San Antonio Spurs in exchange for Kawhi Leonard and Danny Green.
The Raptors traded Jonas Valanciunas and Delon Wright C.J. on February 7, 2019. Miles, along with a 2024 second-round selection draft pick to Memphis Grizzlies for Marc Gasol--another multi-All-Star and former defensive player of the year--and signed Jeremy Lin shortly afterwards.
The Toronto Raptors had a very eventful offseason, making two big trades that sent shockwaves through the NBA. DeMar DeRozan and Jakob Poltl were traded to the Raptors. A 2019 first-round draft selection (that was protected) was also traded to the San Antonio Spurs. In exchange for those players, they received Kawhi Leonard and Danny Green from the Spurs. Then, Jonas Valanciunas was traded to the Spurs in exchange for Delon Wright C. J. Miles, as well as a 2024 draft pick to Memphis Grizzlies for Marc Gasol--another multi-All-Star and former defensive player of the year. These moves have put the Raptors in a strong position to challenge for the NBA title. Let's examine each trade.
The trade for Kawhi Leonard was a risk-reward move for the Raptors. Leonard is a top-5 pick in the league, when healthy, and just finished an MVP-caliber campaign. But, injury limited Leonard to just 9 games last season, and there are doubts about his long term health. However, the Raptors decided the reward was well worth the risk and settled for the deal. So far, Leonard has been healthy and has been playing at an All-Star level. Leonard averages 26 points and 8 rebounds per game. He also shoots 49% from behind the arc and 38% at three-point range. If he can stay healthy, he gives the Raptors a real chance to win an NBA title this season.
Marc Gasol's trade was more a short-term deal than anything else. Gasol is in his thirties and is clearly out of his prime. Gasol is still an excellent player, and he brings valuable experience to the young Raptors. He is averaging fifteen points, eight rebounds, and four assists per game. He shoots 45% from three-point range, while also shooting 45% from behind the arc. The Raptors gave up some young assets in Delon Wright and C.J. They acquired Gasol from Miles, but believe that his experience will prove invaluable in the playoffs.
The Raptors began the season strong with a 6-0 win. They broke the franchise record for winning 16 consecutive games, which was set by a record 16-4 record. On November 23, the Raptors won their 24th game against Cleveland Cavaliers. They also reached 20 wins faster than any other time in their history. The Raptors were cautious with Leonard, resting him for more than 20 games throughout the season to prevent worsening his previous injury. However, they managed to capture 2nd place in East, only trailing behind Milwaukee Bucks.
The Raptors made a strong run in the playoffs and defeated the Philadelphia 76ers in Milwaukee Bucks' finals. The Raptors won their first title in game 6 of the finals against the Golden State Warriors, with Leonard named Finals MVP.
The Toronto Raptors had a great offseason. Two All-Stars are on the roster and the Raptors look poised to be contenders in the years ahead. They have proven they can take risks and make bold moves when it comes down to building a championship-caliber team. It will be interesting for the future to see how they maintain their success.
What's the name of Toronto Raptors mascot?"
The Toronto Raptors is an NBA franchise that was founded in 1995. They play at Scotiabank Arena.
Raptor, a huge red dinosaur, is the Raptors' Mascot. Raptor was introduced in 1995 and appears at home games, entertaining fans with his acrobatics and slam dunks. He is also a regular at charity events and community initiatives in Toronto. For his many years of support to the Raptors, he was named NBA Mascot of the Years in 2019. Raptor, a beloved figure around Toronto and in the NBA, is one of the most prominent mascots within professional sports. He has also been a national symbol for Canada's basketball fans.
Many people in the country and city share Raptor’s passion for his team, and its fans. Raptor has led the Raptors to become one of the most successful NBA teams, winning their first title in 2019. This was a landmark moment for basketball fans in Canada and Toronto. Raptor continues being a source to pride for all Raptors. Raptors pride will continue to be strong as long as he's here. Long live the Raptor. Go, Toronto Raptors!
When was the Raptors first ever playoff win?
Toronto defeated New York 3-2 in their first playoff series. They advanced to the Eastern Conference semifinals under Lenny Wilkens, for the first time in franchise history.
